Sony ULT Field 7 Review : Party Speaker
Sony is recognized for introducing premium audio devices, and one of its newest ULT offerings is the ULT Field 7. The speaker’s first impression encourages you to bring it along on your camping adventures, thanks to its powerful volume and dynamic bass. Having utilized the speakers for more than two weeks, we present our review.
The ULT Field 7 is a round speaker that has received no negative feedback regarding its loudness or sound clarity. Sony’s ULT lineup is well-known for its powerful bass, and this speaker certainly lives up to that reputation thanks to its specialized ULT button. However, does the speaker excel in every regard?
The versatile portable Bluetooth speaker boasts an IP67 rating and is engineered to endure tough outdoor environments.
Below is an in-depth evaluation of the Sony ULT Field 7, focusing on its performance, specifications, advantages and disadvantages, as well as alternative options.
Quality of Design
The ULT Field 7, which is shaped like a cylinder, weighs just over 6 kg and features convenient handles on either side. These handles are comfortable to grip, making it easy to transport the item despite its large dimensions.
However, the weight could be somewhat cumbersome to manage with only one hand (unless you enjoy lifting heavy objects, of course).
Another positive feature of the ULT Field 7 is its construction from robust plastic (polyester), which contributes to its strength, and is further reinforced by a tough mesh that significantly improves the device’s longevity.
Additionally, its IP67 rating guarantees it is both dustproof and waterproof, alleviating any concerns for outdoor activities (including camping, of course). The buttons on the speaker are responsive and user-friendly.
Unfortunately, the flap covering the connectivity ports is somewhat difficult to open because of its rubber material, which could have been designed more effectively.
The ULT Field 7 is equipped with a dual speaker setup, consisting of two 46mm tweeters and two 114mm woofers, enhanced by passive radiators that produce rich bass and crisp treble. In my testing, I was quite impressed with the sound quality at low to moderate volumes, which featured well-balanced treble, bass, and an engaging soundstage.
However, at elevated volumes, the audio can become piercing and unpleasant, particularly when you’re in close proximity to the speaker.
Connectivity and Functionality
Another positive aspect of the Sony ULT Field 7 is its extensive connectivity options. The speaker is equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, supporting SBC, AAC, and LDAC codecs for superior audio playback.
And it also offers multipoint connectivity. This convenient function allows you to connect and use two devices with the same speaker at the same time.
It is equipped with karaoke and guitar inputs featuring a 6.3mm jack, perfect for your vocal sessions or musical displays. The ULT Field 7 boasts customizable LED effects surrounding the rings that shift colors, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Regarding battery performance, the speaker offers up to 30 hours of music playback, though this may decrease when using the ULT modes. However, there’s no need for concern, as it also offers fast charging capabilities.
The device features a specific button for the battery that indicates the remaining charge percentage. Notably, it can function as a portable charger, allowing you to recharge your phone while you are outside.
Cost Level and Options
With a price tag of approximately Rs 50,000 (specifically Rs 49,990 at this time), the Sony ULT Field 7 is a solid choice if your budget allows. However, if you’re interested in options with similar features at lower prices, you might want to look at the JBL Boombox 3 (priced around Rs 40,995), the Sony SRS-XG500 (costing Rs 36,899), or the Sonos Move (approximately Rs 32,718).
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages:
Excellent Audio Quality: Rich bass and crisp treble make it an ideal option for enjoying music.
Sturdy for Outdoor Gatherings: With an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, it’s ideal for outdoor camping, celebrations, and various other activities.
Abundant Features: Karaoke options for musical evenings, adjustable LED lighting for a festive atmosphere, and multiple connectivity points.
Excellent Battery Duration: Provides up to 30 hours of listening time.
Disadvantages:
Slightly heavier: Its weight is just above 6 Kg, which reduces its portability.
Financially Expensive: Priced at approximately Rs 49,990, it represents a considerable expenditure.
Intolerable at Elevated Levels: Certain users might perceive the audio as harsh and tinny when played at increased volumes.
Conclusion:
The Sony ULT Field 7 is an excellent option for anyone looking for a robust audio experience and a sturdy Bluetooth speaker packed with features. Nonetheless, its steep price, piercing sound at louder levels, and bulky design might be factors to consider for certain users.
